And Jonathan at that time accepted the leadership and took the place of Judas his brother: Good News Bible provides a simple and adequate model here. However, the Greek phrase translated at that time says more than “that day” (Good News Bible). It implies, as Goldstein translates, “On that occasion.” An approach we like better for this verse is:

• This was how Jonathan became Israel’s leader, and took the place of his brother Judas.
