John went up from Gazara and reported to Simon his father what Cendebeus had done: See 1Macc 13.53. Gezer, where John was stationed, was close enough to Jamnia and Kedron for him to be aware of what was happening there. Went up refers to going to Jerusalem, and translators who wish may make this explicit. For translators who have placed the author of this book in Jerusalem, an alternative model for this verse is:
• Simon’s son John came from Gezer to Jerusalem and told his father what Cendebeus had done.
