While a similar sign is also used in British Sign Language, another, more neutral sign that combines the sign “J” and the signs for “place” is used as well. (Source: Anna Smith)

Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 14:37

He settled Jews in it may be translated “Simon settled Jewish soldiers in the fortress.”

And fortified it for the safety of the country and of the city may be rendered “and made it stronger [or, strengthened its walls] so that our country and the city of Jerusalem would be safer.”

And built the walls of Jerusalem higher may be expressed as “He also made the walls of the city higher.”

Contemporary English Version has a good model for this verse, changing the order of the clauses slightly as follows:

• “Simon strengthened the walls of the Jerusalem fortress and stationed soldiers there to guard the country and city. He also made the walls around Jerusalem higher.
