21:26a And there he built an altar to the LORD

Then he/David built an altar there to worship Yahweh.

So, David piled up ⌊natural, uncut⌋ stones on which to burn animals to honor Yahweh.

21:26b and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.

He laid the sacrifices to be burned and the friendship offerings on the altar.
-or-
He prepared some animals to be burned completely and others as shared-offerings. ⌊This means some parts of the meat were burned for God and some parts the people ate.⌋

21:26c He called upon the LORD,

He prayed to Yahweh,
-or-
He shouted to Yahweh,

21:26d who answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.

and Yahweh sent fire from the sky to burn up the sacrifice on the altar.

and he answered him/David. He/Yahweh let fire fall on the animals from the sky as an answer ⌊to David’s prayer⌋ .
