apart from works is worthless

The Greek in James 2:20 that is translated as “apart from works is worthless” (or “dead” according to a different Greek reading — see SIL Translator’s Notes on James 2:20) uses a word play (the Greek argē [“worthless” in English] is formed from a- (“not”) and ergon (“work, deed”) and it comes right after ergōn (“works”), so the statement literally reads “faith without works is ‘work-less.'” The Polish Przekład Otwarty translation is able to maintain the word play by using the root czyn- (“deed”): wiara bez uczynków jest bezczynna (“faith without deeds is deedless”), with bezczynny being the ordinary Polish word for “doing nothing, idle.” (Source: Piotr Szuszkiewicz)
