SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Corinthians 8:5

8:5a And not only did they do as we expected,

And they gave differently than we (excl.) expected,
-or-
We did not expect them to do this:

8:5b but they gave themselves first to the Lord

⌊namely,⌋ they first decided to always do what the Lord wanted them to do,
-or-
they first ⌊completely⌋ dedicated themselves to serve the Lord ⌊Jesus⌋.

8:5c and then to us, because it was the will of God.

and then ⌊followed⌋ us as God wanted them to do.
-or-
Then/Next they dedicated themselves to ⌊following⌋ us in God’s will.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Corinthians 9:13

9:13a Because of the proof this ministry provides,

Because of the proof given by this ministry, (New American Standard Bible)
-or-
Doing this ministry ⌊of giving⌋ shows that ⌊you (plur.) kept your promise⌋,

9:13b the saints will glorify God

they will praise God
-or-
so God’s people will praise God
-or-
so those to whom your gift is given will praise God

9:13c for your obedient confession of the gospel of Christ,

(New American Standard Bible) for your obedience to your confession of the gospel of Christ,

because you confessed that the gospel of Christ is true and now obey/follow your own words,
-or-
about/for the fact that you are obeying your own words about the gospel of Christ when you acknowledged that you believed it.

9:13d and for the generosity of your contribution to them and to all the others.

and because you will generously share with them and for all in need.
-or-

⌊They will also praise God⌋ about/for the fact that you will abundantly give ⌊money⌋ in your sharing with them and with all others.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Corinthians 11:12

11:12a But I will keep on doing what I am doing,

And/But I will continue to do as I have done
-or-
I plan to continue to avoid being a burden to you.

11:12b in order to undercut those

so that I may cut off opportunity from those (New American Standard Bible)
-or-
Doing that will block/stop those people from having a chance to

11:12c who want an opportunity to be regarded as our equals

who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are (New American Standard Bible)
-or-
be considered equal with us (excl.). They really want that chance to

11:12d in the things of which they boast.

in the matter about which they are boasting. (New American Standard Bible)
-or-

⌊prove that they are right⌋ to boast/claim that they are equal with us.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Corinthians 12:11

Section 12:11–21

Proof that Paul was an apostle and his concern for the believers

12:11a I have become a fool, but you drove me to it.

I have been foolish, but it is you (plur.) who forced me ⌊to be that way⌋.
-or-
I spoke like a fool ⌊in the things I just wrote⌋, because you yourselves made me do it/that.

12:11b In fact, you should have commended me,

For I should have been recommended by you
-or-
It would have been right/proper for you to recommend me ⌊to others⌋,

12:11c since I am in no way inferior to those “super-apostles,”

because none of the very superior/special “apostles” is in any way superior to me,
-or-
for I have done as much ⌊or more⌋ as those who ⌊wrongly⌋ call themselves the greatest ⌊of all⌋ the ⌊chosen⌋ messengers ⌊of Jesus Christ⌋,

12:11d even though I am nothing.

even if I am nobody.
-or-
even though I have no worth/importance.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Corinthians 1:9

1:9a Indeed, we felt we were under the sentence of death,

Truly in our (excl.) hearts/insides we knew that we had received the decision for our death,
-or-
In fact, we were convinced that we would be killed.
-or-
Indeed, we were certain that someone would kill us ⌊because we obey/follow Jesus⌋.

1:9b in order that we would not trust in ourselves,

in order that we should not trust in ourselves
-or-

⌊But that occurred⌋ so that we will not rely on our own power

1:9c but in God, who raises the dead.

but in God, the one who raises the dead.
-or-
but rather ⌊we should rely⌋ ⌊only⌋ on God. He has the power to make live again those who have died.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Corinthians 2:17

2:17a For we are not like so many others, who peddle the word of God for profit.

For we (excl.) do not preach a corrupted word of God in order to make money, unlike the many ⌊deceivers⌋ who do.
-or-

⌊Such responsibility is hard⌋ because we are not like the many swindlers/con-men who aim to make money by proclaiming ⌊a version of⌋ the word of God that they have changed/modified/corrupted.

2:17b On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity,

But we ⌊always⌋ speak sincerely through Christ in the presence of God,
-or-
But we speak with ⌊complete⌋ sincerity as Christ’s spokesmen ⌊standing⌋ before God,

2:17c as men sent from God.

as people whom God has sent.
-or-
because God has sent us ⌊with his message⌋.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Corinthians 4:14

4:14a knowing that the One who raised the Lord Jesus

because we (excl.) know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus ⌊to life⌋
-or-
because we are sure that he who caused Jesus, the ruler ⌊over all⌋, to live again ⌊after he had died⌋

4:14b will also raise us with Jesus

will also raise us (excl.) ⌊to life⌋ through Jesus
-or-
will also cause us to live again just as he raised Jesus.

4:14c and present us with you in His presence.

and bring us (excl.) along with you (plur.) to stand before him.
-or-
And God will bring us (excl.), together with you, to present us (incl.) all to himself.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Corinthians 6:7

6:7a in truthful speech and in the power of God;

(Good News Translation) by our message of truth, and by the power of God.

by declaring the truth, and by the power of God.
-or-
when we (excl.) tell the true message, and when God’s power ⌊is clearly seen in our lives/ministry⌋,

6:7b with the weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left;

⌊We also commend ourselves⌋ by ⌊using⌋ weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left ⌊hand⌋,
-or-
when we use ⌊the ways⌋ of righteousness that are ⌊like⌋ weapons for the right hand and the left ⌊hand⌋,
-or-
when we live/minister by means of the ways of righteousness that advance the kingdom of God and the ways ⌊of righteousness⌋ that defend us,
