Scriptures Plain & Simple (Matthew 5:43-48)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Matthew 5:43-48:

From ancient times, it’s been said: “Love friends. Hate enemies!

But I tell you to love your enemies
and pray for everyone who mistreats you.
That’s how to behave like children of your Father above,
who provides rain and sunshine for everyone, good or evil.

Do you love only those who love you?
Are you good only to your friends?
So what? Even the worst of people are good to their friends.

I tell you to always behave like children of your Father above!

Scriptures Plain & Simple (Luke 7:1-10)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Luke 7:1-10:

Jesus was back in Capernaum,
where a Roman army officer’s favorite servant
was at the point of death.
So when the officer heard Jesus was in town,
he sent some Jewish leaders with a request
for Jesus to come and heal his servant.

The leaders went to Jesus and begged him to help —
“This man is truly deserving,” they stated.
“He loves our nation and even built us a synagogue.”
       So Jesus went with them.

As Jesus approached the officer’s house,
the officer sent some friends with a message:
“Sir, please don’t trouble yourself on my account!
I’m not worthy for you to stand under my roof,
and I’m certainly not worthy to look you in the face.

“Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
       I myself am under orders,
and I have men under my command.
       If I say ‘Jump!’ they jump;
if I say ‘Sit down!’ they sit down.”

When Jesus heard this, he was so surprised
that he said to the crowd following him,
       “I’ve never seen such faith!”

The officer’s friends returned and found the servant well.

Scriptures Plain & Simple (Matthew 7:24-29)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Matthew 7:24-29:

If you obey my teachings, you’re wise —
you’ve built your house on solid rock.
Neither drenching rains, nor floods, nor hurricanes
can shake that house from its solid foundation.

If you disobey my teachings, you’re foolish —
you’ve built your house on shifting sands.
Drenching rains, floods, or hurricanes can shake that house,
and it will collapse with a loud crash.

Jesus surprised everyone by teaching with such authority
as they had never witnessed before —
not even from the most renowned biblical scholars!

Scriptures Plain & Simple (Mark 1:40-45)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Mark 1:40-45:

A man with leprosy came and knelt down to Jesus,
begging, “Your power can make me well,
       if only you are willing.”

Jesus felt sorrow for the man.
So he placed his hand on him and said,
       “I’m willing—now you are well.”
At once the leprosy disappeared!

Jesus sent the man away with a warning,
“Don’t tell anyone except those you must
to be pronounced free of leprosy.
Then do what the Bible teaches
by offering a gift at the temple,
so everyone else will know you’re well.”

But the man instead told everyone he met —
so many that Jesus had to stay away from the towns.
But crowds still flocked to him in the desert.

Scriptures Plain & Simple (Luke 23:44-49)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Luke 23:44-49:

The sun stopped shining and shadowy darkness
spread like a shroud from noon to mid afternoon.
The temple curtain split down the middle,
as the final words of Jesus thundered,
“Father, I trust myself to you!”

A Roman soldier witnessed the events and exclaimed,
“Today I’ve seen a truly good man!”

The crowd that had gathered to gape at the gruesome sight,
dispersed and disappeared with broken hearts.
But the close friends of Jesus — especially the women
who had accompanied him from Galilee —
stood at a distance as solemn witnesses.

Scriptures Plain & Simple (Matthew 6:1-4)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Matthew 6:1-4:

Do you accompany your good deeds with a toot on your own horn?
Do you give to the poor in hope of praise from others?
Well, so do hypocrites who seek praise in church and in public.
Earthly praise is their full reward.

Be secretive and silent when you give to the poor!
Your Father above knows everything —
so be patient! Your reward is waiting for you.

Scriptures Plain & Simple (Luke 7:11-17)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Luke 7:11-17:

Jesus and his followers were on the way to the village of Nain,
with a big crowd surrounding them.
As they approached the town gate,
they saw a funeral procession —
a widow’s only son was being carried out for burial,
and many of the village people were with her.
When Jesus saw the woman, he felt sorry for her and said,
       “You can stop crying now.”

Then he went over and touched the stretcher
on which the dead boy was lying.
The funeral procession came to a halt,
and Jesus said, “Young man, sit up!”
The boy sat up and started speaking.

“Here’s your son!” Jesus said to the widow.

Though everyone was frightened,
       they praised God and exclaimed,
“A great prophet has now arrived!
God has come to save us all!”

News about Jesus spread everywhere.

Scriptures Plain & Simple (Matthew 18:21-35)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Matthew 18:21-35:

“Forgiveness times seven is surely enough
to offer anyone who offends me,” said Peter.

“Try seven times that amount!” answered Jesus,
“and listen to this story about the Ultimate Kingdom.”

The CEO of a big corporation called in his employees
to account for their use of the company funds.
One of them came up fifty million dollars short,
              and he was broke.

“His wife and children are just as guilty,” said the CEO.
“Lock all of them up and throw away the key,
until he pays back every cent he owes.”

But the man begged for mercy
and swore he’d repay every cent.
So the soft-hearted CEO forgave his debt.

On the way out of the office, the man happened to meet
an office boy who owed him a measly fifty bucks.
With his hands around the throat of he boy, he shouted,
“Pay me every cent you owe!”

The boy begged for mercy and swore to repay every cent.
But there was no mercy, and the boy was thrown into jail
until he could repay the full amount.

Some other employees found out what had happened,
and they reported the matter to the CEO,
who called the man in and said, “You’re evil!
When you begged for mercy, I forgave every penny.
Isn’t that what you should have done for this boy?
I’ll have your hide for this!
You, your wife, and your family of four
              will perish impoverished in prison.”

“Listen up!” exclaimed Jesus.
“If you don’t forgive others with all your heart,
my Father above will treat you like this.”
