Scriptures Plain & Simple (Matthew 6:1-4)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Matthew 6:1-4:

Do you accompany your good deeds with a toot on your own horn?
Do you give to the poor in hope of praise from others?
Well, so do hypocrites who seek praise in church and in public.
Earthly praise is their full reward.

Be secretive and silent when you give to the poor!
Your Father above knows everything —
so be patient! Your reward is waiting for you.

Scriptures Plain & Simple (Luke 7:11-17)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Luke 7:11-17:

Jesus and his followers were on the way to the village of Nain,
with a big crowd surrounding them.
As they approached the town gate,
they saw a funeral procession —
a widow’s only son was being carried out for burial,
and many of the village people were with her.
When Jesus saw the woman, he felt sorry for her and said,
       “You can stop crying now.”

Then he went over and touched the stretcher
on which the dead boy was lying.
The funeral procession came to a halt,
and Jesus said, “Young man, sit up!”
The boy sat up and started speaking.

“Here’s your son!” Jesus said to the widow.

Though everyone was frightened,
       they praised God and exclaimed,
“A great prophet has now arrived!
God has come to save us all!”

News about Jesus spread everywhere.

Scriptures Plain & Simple (Matthew 18:21-35)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Matthew 18:21-35:

“Forgiveness times seven is surely enough
to offer anyone who offends me,” said Peter.

“Try seven times that amount!” answered Jesus,
“and listen to this story about the Ultimate Kingdom.”

The CEO of a big corporation called in his employees
to account for their use of the company funds.
One of them came up fifty million dollars short,
              and he was broke.

“His wife and children are just as guilty,” said the CEO.
“Lock all of them up and throw away the key,
until he pays back every cent he owes.”

But the man begged for mercy
and swore he’d repay every cent.
So the soft-hearted CEO forgave his debt.

On the way out of the office, the man happened to meet
an office boy who owed him a measly fifty bucks.
With his hands around the throat of he boy, he shouted,
“Pay me every cent you owe!”

The boy begged for mercy and swore to repay every cent.
But there was no mercy, and the boy was thrown into jail
until he could repay the full amount.

Some other employees found out what had happened,
and they reported the matter to the CEO,
who called the man in and said, “You’re evil!
When you begged for mercy, I forgave every penny.
Isn’t that what you should have done for this boy?
I’ll have your hide for this!
You, your wife, and your family of four
              will perish impoverished in prison.”

“Listen up!” exclaimed Jesus.
“If you don’t forgive others with all your heart,
my Father above will treat you like this.”

Scriptures Plain & Simple (Luke 22:24-30)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Luke 22:24-30:

A heated debate broke out among the followers of Jesus —
each of them saying, “I’m the greatest!”

But Jesus interrupted and said:
“Foreign kings order their subjects around,
while claiming to be everyone’s friend.
Don’t be like that! I’ve come as your servant,
and if you want to be truly great,               then become a servant yourself.
You may think a king is superior to a servant,
but I’ve been a servant to you.

“You’ve been faithful friends in all my troubles,
so I’ll let each of you rule as a king,
just as my Father has promised.
Not only will you eat and drink with me        in the Ultimate Kingdom —
you’ll each have authority of your own.”

Scriptures Plain & Simple (Matthew 2:1-12)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Matthew 2:1-12:

They came from the east when Herod was king in Judea.
They were authorities themselves, authorities about stars, and they asked in Jerusalem,
“Where is the child born to be king of your nation?
In the east we saw the star that signaled his birth,
and we have come to worship him.”

This news worried King Herod and everyone else in town.
So Herod called together the religious authorities and asked,
“Where is this new king supposed to be born?”

They replied, “In Bethlehem, just as the prophet wrote:
‘Bethlehem — so important in Judea—from you will come
One with absolute authority over God’s flock.’”

Herod was sly, and after he had sent for the star-authorities,
he said, “Go to Bethlehem and return with all the details,
so I can worship this new king.”

The eastern authorities followed the star
until it had settled over the child’s home —
       they were overwhelmed with joy…

When they entered the house,
they saw him with Mary his mother.
So they knelt down and worshiped the child,
placing at his feet the treasures they had brought.
Later — after being warned in a dream –
they returned home by a different route.

Scriptures Plain & Simple (Mark 2:1-12)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Mark 2:1-12:

When Jesus returned home to Capernaum,
such a mob crowded around the door
that no standing room was left.

Jesus was teaching when four people arrived,
carrying a disabled man on a mat.
Unable to squeeze through the mob,
they dug through the mud roof and let the man down
in the middle of the room.

“Such faith!” thought Jesus. Then he said to the man,
“My friend, your sins are forgiven.”

Some biblical scholars were there and started wondering,
“Does this guy think he’s God
with the power to forgive sins?”

Jesus realized what was going on, so he said,
“Is it easier to forgive this man or to heal him?
I’ll show you who has the power
to forgive sins here and now.”

So Jesus said to the man,
“Take your mat and head home!”

At this, the man rose to his feet, picked up his mat,
and headed home, while everyone stood there stunned.
       “Praise God!” they shouted,
“We’ve never seen anything like this before.”

Scriptures Plain & Simple (Luke 23:50-56)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Luke 23:50-56:

Joseph Arimathea was honest and earnest,
eagerly awaiting the advent of the Ultimate Kingdom.
Although he was a member of the council,
he had disagreed with their decision to execute Jesus.

Joseph approached Pilate, requesting the body of Jesus.
He removed it from the cross, and wrapped it in a linen cloth,
before placing it in a tomb carved from solid rock —
a pristine tomb, as yet undefiled by death.

Friday had arrived — the Sabbath would commence at sunset.
Those women who had come from Galilee
now followed Joseph and watched
as the body was placed in the tomb.
They wanted to go at once and prepare burial spices,
but their religion required they rest on the Sabbath.

Scriptures Plain & Simple (Matthew 6:5-15)

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Matthew 6:5-15:

When you pray, don’t prattle and rattle like hypocrites —
those prancing pious porkers, seeking praise in a pigsty.
Earthly praise is their full reward.

Keep your prayer life between you and God alone!
Your Father above knows everything.
So be patient! Your reward is waiting for you.

No need to prattle and rattle when you pray.
Such prayers irritate the ears of God.

Your Father already knows what you need,
so pray like this:
Father above, help us to honor your name.
Let us see you rule on earth, as you rule in heaven.
Then everyone will obey you down here,
just as you are obeyed up there.

Provide us with food for this day
and forgive us for doing wrong, as we forgive others.

Don’t test us beyond our strength,
              and protect us from evil.

Forgive others when you are mistreated,
then your Father above will forgive you.
Fail to forgive others, and you won’t be forgiven.
