Translation commentary on Zechariah 3:6

The action in the vision is now completed, and the remaining verses have the form of an oracle embedded within the vision (compare 1.14-17). This is therefore an appropriate place to begin a new paragraph, as do Revised Standard Version, Good News Translation, and many other versions.

And the angel of the LORD enjoined Joshua: The word translated enjoined is appropriate to a solemn commission or the giving of responsibility. Several modern versions use the word “charge” (New English Bible/ Revised English Bible, New International Version, New Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh). Another way to express this clause is “The Angel of the LORD solemnly assured Joshua” (Beck; compare New Revised Standard Version). Joshua’s continuing as high priest would depend upon his carrying out these responsibilities carefully.
