Translation commentary on Tobit 4:1

Remembered has the sense here of “decided to do something about,” which will be a good translation in a number of languages.

Left in trust: See the note on 1.14.

Though the alternate Greek text mentions the city of Rages at 1.14, this is the first occurrence in the text we are following. It is important to note that Rages is not an English word to be translated. It is simply the name of a city. It is also mentioned in Jdt 1.5 as “Ragae.” This city is now in ruins, located a few miles from modern Teheran.

An alternative translation model for this verse is:

• That same day Tobit decided to do something about the silver he had left with Gabael in the city of Rages in the land of Media.
