And after him Nathan rose up to prophesy in the days of David: Good News Translation provides a good model here, although a translator might want to say “After Samuel” rather than “After him” since this is the first verse of a new chapter. In the days of David may be rendered “while David was king” or “while David ruled over Israel.”
An alternative model for this verse is:
• After Samuel came Nathan, who was a prophet [or, who spoke God’s message] while David was king [or, ruled over Israel].
