After him rose up a wise son who fared amply because of him: This means that David ruled in such a way that his son, ruling later, was able to live comfortably and safely. Fared amply, as the Revised Standard Version footnote says, is literally “lived in a broad place,” and “in a broad place” means “safely, well, comfortably, securely.” This idea is missing from Good News Translation. For this verse we could say:

• David ruled in such a way that when his son, a wise man, became king, no enemy from outside the country threatened him.

This is a bit wordy, but it is what the text means.
