Translation commentary on Romans 15:33

The third person imperative, introduced in English by the auxiliary may, may be expressed in some languages as prayer: “I pray that God.”

In the present context the phrase “the God of peace” means “the God who is our source of peace” (see An American Translation* “God who gives peace”) or “who causes us to experience peace.”

Since Amen in this context occurs in close proximity to an expression of prayer, it may be most satisfactory to retain the transliterated form, particularly if this is well known and widely used in the receptor-language community.
