We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan: We renders an independent and emphatic pronoun in Hebrew, which should be reflected in translation by saying “Indeed, we” or “To be sure, we.” Pass over may be translated “cross the Jordan” (New International Readers Version) for clarity. For armed, which renders the Hebrew verb chalats, see verse 21. Here Good News Translation renders it “and go into battle.” Before the LORD may be translated “under the LORD’s command” (similarly Good News Translation; see verse 21).

And the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan: For the possession of our inheritance, which renders the Hebrew synonyms ʾachuzzah and nachalah, see the comments on 27.7. Contemporary English Version renders this phrase “the land we will inherit as our own.” Beyond the Jordan, as seen from Canaan, refers to “east of the Jordan” (Good News Translation). Since the Gadites and Reubenites are saying this from the east side of the Jordan, New International Readers Version renders this whole clause as “But the property we receive will be on this side of the Jordan River.”
