The LORD said to Moses: See 1.1. This quote frame, the so-called “divine message formula,” is a prominent discourse opening marker in the book of Numbers (next occurring at 31.1). As mentioned in the introductory comments on this section, chapters 28–29 interrupt the chronology of the narrative. Chronologically, they do not come after chapter 27, since in 27.12-23 Moses had already transferred the leadership to Joshua. So translators should not begin this verse with a sequential connector, such as “And” (King James Version, Zürcher Bibel, Luther) or “Further” (Statenvertaling/em>). Most translations omit the Hebrew waw conjunction (literally “And”) at the beginning of this verse (so Revised Standard Version, Good News Translation).
