So you shall remember and do all my commandments: See the previous verse. The conjunction So introduces the purpose for the tassels. The close connection between verses 39 and 40 is conveyed by Good News Translation‘s repetition of the topic “The tassels.” Revised English Bible renders this clause as “This token is to ensure that you remember and obey all my commands.” The word “token” suggests the symbolic nature of the tassels.

And be holy to your God means the Israelites must be totally dedicated to God and set apart for his service, so Good News Translation says “and you will belong completely to me,” and De Nieuwe Bijbelvertaling has “and to remain dedicated to your God.” Revised English Bible combines the form with the meaning by saying “and keep yourselves holy, consecrated to your God.”
