Translation commentary on Numbers 14:8

If the LORD delights in us: What would please the LORD in this particular situation? Contemporary English Version brings out the implication here by saying “If we obey the LORD.”

He will bring us into this land and give it to us means the LORD will lead the Israelites to Canaan and allow them to conquer it.

A land which flows with milk and honey: As mentioned at 13.27 (see the comments there), this figurative expression is found frequently in the Pentateuch to describe the land of Canaan as “rich and fertile” (Good News Translation). It was abundant in fruits and crops, and by extension also livestock and wild game. We advise translators to keep this idiom, or at least to render this clause with a natural idiom of the target language.
