Kept burning: see verse 9.

It shall not go out conveys the same meaning as kept burning but makes the statement more emphatic. In some languages the two may have to be combined, but the emphasis should be retained where possible.

Shall burn wood on it: the priest must add new firewood every morning in order to be able to perform his other duties at the altar. New English Bible translates “have fresh firewood burning thereon.” And New Jerusalem Bible reads “feed wood to it,” while New International Version has “… is to add firewood.”
