Verses 37 and 38 probably constitute the beginning of the conclusion to chapter 23 (which actually ends with verse 44). Some scholars take verses 39-43 as a later addition which interrupted the concluding paragraph. For this reason they have proposed shifting verses 37-38 and placing them between verse 43 and verse 44. However, it is probably best to leave them here, but set them off as a separate paragraph and put them in parentheses, as in Good News Translation.

Appointed feasts: see verse 2.

Offerings by fire, burnt offerings and cereal offerings: see chapters 1–7.

Sacrifices: this is a very general term but probably refers to the fellowship offering or “peace offering” detailed in chapter 3. New English Bible translates “shared-offerings,” and Bible en français courant has “communion sacrifices.”

Drink offerings: see verses 13 and 18.

Each on its proper day: literally “the thing (or, affair) of the day for its day.” That is, everything is to be done at the proper time required by the LORD.
