Translation commentary on Judith 5:9

Achior now relates the move to Canaan, so Good News Translation begins a new paragraph here. Translators should also do this.

Then their God commanded them to leave the place where they were living: The connector Then is better rendered “Afterward” (Good News Translation) or “After this.” Their God refers to the “God of heaven” in the previous verse. Good News Translation uses small initial “god” instead of God presumably to show that Achior is talking about one “god” among many. Leave the place where they were living may be rendered “leave Mesopotamia” (Good News Translation, Contemporary English Version).

There they settled, and prospered: The Greek uses two words that have been translated as settled, but they differ a little in meaning. In verse 8 the people settle temporarily in Mesopotamia, as indicated above. Here they settle intending to stay. This word is also used at 5.16 (see also the notes on 5.15, 16, 19). Prospered may be translated “became very rich” (Good News Translation, Contemporary English Version) or “gained lots of possessions.”

Much gold and silver and very many cattle: They probably had much gold and silver in either coins or bars. Translators should not say “money” here. For cattle see Tob 1.6.
