Translation commentary on Judith 12:17

Drink now employs a particle meaning “please” in this context, so this clause may be rendered “Please drink.” See the note below on the next verse also.

Be merry with us is literally “become with us unto joy.” Moore points out that the phrase “become with us” is used by the elders in their crude sexual proposition to Susanna (Dan 13.20 in Catholic Bibles; Sus 20 in Protestant Apocrypha). See also its use in Tob 3.8. Us means “me”; see the notes on verses 10-12.
