Good News Translation has attempted to combine these two verses, but the result is not very satisfactory. For example, the reader searches in vain for the relation between Joshua’s getting up early the next morning and the marching of the priests and the soldiers around the city for a second time. If the purpose of Joshua’s getting up early the next morning is made explicit in translation, then it is possible to retain the verse sequence without placing together verses 12-13. For example:

• Early the next morning Joshua got up and gave the same command to the priests and to his men. So the priests who had been commanded to carry the Covenant Box placed it upon their shoulders. 13 Then they all marched around the city in the same order as the day before: first, the advance guard; next, the seven priests who blew the trumpets all the time that they were marching; then, the priests who carried the LORD’s Covenant Box; and finally, the rear guard.
