Remembered is literally “knew” (Revised Standard Version), but the force of “to remember” or “to realize” (Moffatt, New American Bible, Jerusalem Bible) is more appropriate to the context. It is important not to use a term for “remember” which would suggest that the official had forgotten what Jesus had said. The appropriate meaning in some languages is “realized,” “became aware of,” or “recognized.”

So he and all his family believed is literally “so he believed and all his family.” This construction is the same type discussed earlier (see 2.2). The word Good News Translation translates family may have the wider meaning of “household” (so many translations). In the present context the word believed means that the man and his family “became believers” (see Moffatt, New English Bible, New American Bible); Phillips translates this word “believed in Jesus.” Such a translation is necessary if the object of faith must be expressed in the receptor language.
