In the Greek text The chief priests is literally “the chief priests of the Jews,” but “of the Jews” is redundant in this context.
Said to Pilate (so most translations) is translated by New English Bible “tried to tell Pilate,” to indicate that their attempt effected no result.
This man (literally “that one”) may be used in a derogatory sense.
