Do you believe now? is rendered as a question in most modern translations. However, Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch (“now you believe; (32) but…”) and the New English Bible margin (“At the moment you believe; but look…”) punctuate it as a statement. The similar situation in 13.38 supports a question here, though no absolute decision can be made. Either way, whether a question or a statement, the impact of Jesus’ words is to cast doubt on the strength of the disciples’ faith. To indicate clearly the inadequacy of the disciples’ faith, it may be useful to render the question “Do you really believe now?” or “Do you have complete confidence in me now?”
