Wise men translates the same noun as “wise” in verse 8. The context suggests that these are the same persons referred to as “scribes” in verse 8.

Shall be put to shame (see “shall be shamed” in 2.26) is translated “will become speechless” by Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch, while Traduction œcuménique de la Bible has “will be in a state of confusion.” Most translators, however, retain “put to shame.”

Be dismayed (Good News Translation “confused”) translates the same verb first used in 1.17. As there, some translators will use expressions such as “be seized with fear” or “be terrified.”

Taken is translated “trapped” by Good News Translation and New International Version, which accepts a figurative interpretation; that is, the wise will be “caught out” or “caught in a trap.” Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch understands the expression literally, and has “be led away as captives.”

Lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD, and what wisdom is in them?: The last part of the verse may be reformulated as a statement: “They have rejected the LORD’s words. They no longer have any wisdom.” For lo refer to “Behold” in 1.6.
