Translation commentary on Jeremiah 51:37

A heap of ruins translates one word in Hebrew; it is used elsewhere only in 9.11.

The haunt of jackals: See 49.33. This may be expressed as “where only jackals live” (Contemporary English Version).

A horror and a hissing: See 18.16. The word horror is first used in 2.15 (Revised Standard Version “waste”), while the word translated hissing appears only in 19.8 (Revised Standard Version “a thing to be hissed at”); 25.9, 18; 29.18. A word of the same consonants, but different vowels, is rendered “hissing” by Revised Standard Version in 18.16; see there for comments.
