Translation commentary on Jeremiah 5:11

The house of Israel and the house of Judah: See 2.4. Good News Translation translates “The people of Israel and Judah.”

Have been … faithless translates the same verb as does the participle rendered “false” in 3.8. Have been utterly faithless to me is translated “have betrayed me completely” by Good News Translation and “How treacherously they have treated me” by New Jerusalem Bible. In the Hebrew, have been … faithless is repeated for emphasis, so Revised Standard Version adds utterly. Good News Translation has “completely.” Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch translates the verse:

• This is what I, the Lord, say because the people of Israel and Judah have turned completely away from me.
