Translation commentary on Jeremiah 36:25

Urged: This verb is used also in 15.11, where Revised Standard Version renders “pleaded.” Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged the king to not burn the scroll while he was doing it. “Had urged” would therefore also be possible in English. There are some languages where translators will have to keep the sequence correct with an expression such as “While the king was burning the scroll, Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged him not to do it.”
