Translation commentary on Jeremiah 17:22

The prohibitions continue. The people are ordered to not even carry a load out of their houses on the Sabbath, or do any work. Instead, they are to keep the sabbath day holy. Good News Translation expresses this as “observe it as a sacred day,” and Bible en français courant as “keep this day for me.” Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch has “celebrate it as a day that belongs to me exclusively.” Translators may also say “Keep this as a day to honor [or, worship] me” or “on the day of rest you should only do what honors me.”

As I commanded your fathers: Fathers (see 2.5) is here the equivalent of “ancestors” (Good News Translation). Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch connects this clause with the following verse: “This is what I commanded your ancestors, 23 but they did not obey me or pay any attention.”
