The bare heights: See the comment at 3.2.
Jackals: See 9.11. Here, if jackals are unknown, translators can use “wild dogs” or “foxes,” since both animals are similar to jackals, and both pant for breath.
Their eyes fail means “their eyesight fails them” (Good News Translation).
Because there is no herbage: In this context herbage refers to grass or green plants that the donkeys eat as food, so Good News Translation has “because they have no food” and Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch “because there is nothing more to eat.” Translators could also say “because there is no grass for them to eat” or “because there is no pasture.”
