Verses 17-19 are almost identical to each other, and they have the same problems as verse 16 (see the comments there). These verses describe the measurement of the Temple’s outer wall on the other three sides: north (verse 17), south (verse 18), and west (verse 19). Although these directions do not follow the expected clockwise or counterclockwise sequence, it is best to retain the sequence as it stands (compare Rev 21.13). Each of these verses differs from verse 16 by omitting the repetitious phrase “with the measuring reed.” The only other significant difference is at the beginning of verse 19, where the phrase Then he turned accurately reflects the Hebrew. The Hebrew word meaning “all around” does not occur at the end of verses 18 and 19.
A model for verses 17-19 is:
• 17 He measured the [wall on the] northern side. It was 250 meters long [measured] by the measuring rod around the outside. 18 He measured the [wall on the] southern side. It was 250 meters long [measured] by the measuring rod. 19 He turned to the [wall on the] western side and measured [it]. It was 250 meters long [measured] by the measuring rod.
