Then they shall know that I am the LORD their God: For this recognition formula, see verse 22.
Because I sent them into exile among the nations, and then gathered them into their own land: The reason why the Israelites will recognize Yahweh as their God is because he will bring them back home after sending them into exile. I sent them into exile may be rendered “I … sent them into captivity” (New King James Version ) or “I … sent them away as prisoners” (Contemporary English Version). For the idea of exile, see verse 23. Although some translations understand that God has already gathered the people back into their land (so Revised Standard Version, New Century Version, King James Version / New King James Version), it is better to understand that the ingathering is still in the future; for example, New International Version says “I will gather them to their own land.”
I will leave none of them remaining among the nations any more: When God brings the Israelites back, he will not miss a single person. New International Reader’s Version says “I will not leave anyone behind.”
Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch provides an excellent model for this verse by rearranging the clauses in a more logical sequence as follows:
• I took them away out of their land and scattered them among the nations; but I am bringing [or, will bring] them together again, leaving no one behind. So they will recognize that I, the LORD, am their God.
