Yea renders the Hebrew word ki, which functions as an emphatic particle here. New Revised Standard Version has “Yes,” and New Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh uses “Truly.” Some translations render it as a logical connector, such as “For” (King James Version / New King James Version, New American Standard Bible, New Jerusalem Bible, New American Bible, Moffatt), but there is no causal relationship between verses 58 and 59. Other translations omit it for naturalness (so Good News Translation, Contemporary English Version, New International Version, New Century Version, Revised English Bible). Translators will need to decide whether they have an appropriate equivalent in their languages.
Thus says the Lord GOD: This traditional prophetic formula continues the emphatic introduction to this final subsection of the chapter (see Ezek 16.3).
I will deal with you as you have done means God will punish Jerusalem as she deserves. Her punishment will be appropriate to the crimes she committed. New International Version has “I will deal with you as you deserve” (similarly Good News Translation, New Living Translation, Revised English Bible, New Jerusalem Bible). Translators may say “I will punish you as you deserve for the evil you have done.”
Who have despised the oath in breaking the covenant: This clause summarizes Jerusalem’s sins in terms of breaking her covenant with God. Despised the oath means not taking seriously the curses that apply to someone who breaks the covenant (see Deut 27.11-26). When the people of Jerusalem sinned as they did, they were breaking the covenant and showed they were not concerned about being punished as Deut 27 said they would be. The covenant here refers to the agreement God made with Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai, although it hints at the marriage agreement made in verse 8 between God and the girl in the parable (see the comments there). However, in this verse the parable is almost forgotten and the historical situation is in focus.
A model for this verse is:
• The Lord Yahweh says, “Yes, I will punish you as you deserve for what you have done. You haven’t cared about [or, You have disregarded] the oath you made to me and have broken the agreement we made.
A model that makes the meaning more explicit is:
• The Lord Yahweh says to Jerusalem, “Yes, indeed, I will do to you what you deserve. We made an agreement at Mount Sinai and that agreement described the punishment that you would receive if you broke the agreement. You did not take those punishments seriously and you broke the agreement. So now I am bringing those punishments on you.
