Translation commentary on Exod 29:16

And you shall slaughter the ram uses the same verb as in verse 11, although Revised Standard Version has translated it differently. And shall take its blood here means all of the blood. And throw it against the altar is literally “and you shall scatter upon the altar.” This is a different verb from the word for “pour” in verse 12. The translations vary: “dash it” (New Revised Standard Version), “splash it” (New American Bible), “fling it” (Revised English Bible), “sprinkle it” (New International Version), and “splatter” (Contemporary English Version). Round about is one word meaning “all around.” Since the altar had four sides, Good News Translation and Contemporary English Version have “against all four sides of the altar.”
