For many days must be understood to identify the total period during which Jesus appeared at various times, since appeared is rendered in a number of languages in a particular repetitive from of the verb meaning “to appear on various occasions.”
He appeared to translates a verb which is rendered by some as “he was seen” (see 1.3). Once again we see that in Luke’s thought the only valid witnesses to the resurrection are those persons who had been with the Lord during his early ministry, because this is precisely what in meant by the reference to those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. It may be necessary in some languages to emphasize the time element reflected in the English verb had traveled by rendering this as “had earlier traveled.”
To the people of Israel is literally “to the people,” an expression used many times in the Old Testament with the limited notion of the people of Israel.
