Just as Moses prayed to the Lord, and fire came down from heaven and devoured the sacrifices: See Lev 9.24.
So also Solomon prayed, and the fire came down and consumed the whole burnt offerings: See 2~Chr 7.1. We urge translators to follow Good News Bible in reversing the two halves of this verse, so that the mention of Solomon follows verse 9 and the mention of Moses leads into verse 11. This also allows translators to reduce the repetition here: prayed, fire came down, devoured/consumed. For example, Good News Bible says “fire came down” only once, and it combines devoured and consumed into “consumed” (similarly Contemporary English Version). The one difference in the two halves of the verse is the use of sacrifices as opposed burnt offerings (see the comments on 1Macc 1.45). However, Lev 9.24 makes it clear that Moses’ sacrifices were burnt offerings, so translators may also combine sacrifices and burnt offerings (so Good News Bible and Contemporary English Version with “sacrifices”). However, some translators may feel that in their language this repetition helps to heighten the effect. If this is the case, the references to prayer and to fire coming down and devouring the sacrifices should be included with both the mention of Solomon and of Moses.
