In this verse Solomon is assured not only that he will rule over Israel, but that his dynasty will continue permanently according to the promise given to David, his father.
Then (also New Revised Standard Version, Revised English Bible) renders the common Hebrew conjunction. Here it introduces the consequence of Solomon’s obedience. This connector may be left implied (so Good News Translation, New International Version, Nouvelle Bible Segond, Traduction œcuménique de la Bible).
I will establish your royal throne: See the comments on 1 Chr 22.10. This clause may be rendered “I will make sure that you and your descendants rule” or “I will make your kingdom strong” (New Century Version).
As I covenanted with David your father means God made a solemn promise to David, one that was certain and could not be broken. See 1 Kgs 2.4. Covenanted is literally “cut [a covenant]”; see the comments on 1 Chr 11.3. For this whole clause Revised English Bible has “as I promised by a covenant granted to your father David.”
There shall not fail you a man to rule Israel is literally “There shall not be cut off to you a man from ruling Israel.” See the comments on 2 Chr 6.16. In some languages it may be better to render this negative expression as a positive statement; for example, New Century Version says “Someone from your family will always rule in Israel.” This direct quotation of what God had said earlier to David is found within the larger quotation of what God is now saying to Solomon. Since such embedded quotations are problematic for some languages, indirect discourse may be used here as Good News Translation and Contemporary English Version have done.
