And he built altars in the house of the LORD: In this context the altars are for foreign gods. In order to make this meaning clear, Good News Translation says “pagan altars,” and Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch has “altars to foreign gods.”

Of which the LORD had said, “In Jerusalem shall my name be for ever”: The meaning of this short statement by Yahweh is that he always wanted his people to worship him in the Temple at Jerusalem (see the comments on 1 Chr 22.8 and 2 Chr 6.5). A more complete statement of this abbreviated declaration is found in verse 7. The direct quotation of Revised Standard Version may be better rendered as indirect discourse in some languages. Good News Translation provides one model for doing this. Another possible model is to use a separate sentence, saying “The LORD had clearly instructed his people to worship only him in that place forever.”
