And Amaziah said to the man of God: The verb said may be rendered “asked” (Good News Translation) since a question from Amaziah to the prophet follows. For the man of God, see 2Chr 24.7.

But what shall we do…? is literally “And what to do…?” The contrastive connector But, which renders the common Hebrew conjunction, fits well here since Amaziah is concerned about the money he will lose if he simply dismisses the Israelite troops whom he had already paid. The pronoun we added by Revised Standard Version is probably a “royal we” in English although it may possibly refer to the king and his subjects, who no doubt helped to raise the funds in view. Good News Translation omits the verb do, and New American Bible transforms it into a passive by saying “But what is to be done…?” Revised English Bible translates “What am I to do…?” For the hundred talents, see the comments on 2Chr 25.6. Rather than repeat the exact amount, Good News Translation and Bible en français courant say “all that silver” for reasons of style in the receptor language.

The man of God answered: The verb answered is literally “said,” but Revised Standard Version‘s rendering is appropriate since the prophet’s answer to Amaziah’s question follows.

The LORD is able to give you much more than this may be rendered “The LORD can give you back much more than you paid” (similarly Contemporary English Version).

In those languages were the direct quotations in this verse are problematic, a possible model in indirect discourse is:

• Then Amaziah asked the prophet what he should do about all the silver that he would lose in payment for the Israelite troops. And the prophet replied that the LORD could give him much more than what he had paid.
