Thus renders the common Hebrew conjunction. In this context it may be left untranslated (so Good News Translation and most other versions).
Joash the king did not remember the kindness which Jehoiada, Zechariah’s father, had shown him, but killed his son: Joash certainly would have been able to recall Jehoiada’s kindness. He did not forget it, but ignored it. For did not remember, NET Bible and New Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh have “disregarded,” and New American Bible uses “was unmindful of.” Another possible verb is “neglected.” Kindness renders the Hebrew word chesed, which refers to Jehoiada’s faithful love and devotion to Joash in this context (see the comments on 1 Chr 16.34 and 2 Chr 1.8). Revised English Bible and New Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh say “loyalty,” and New American Bible has “devotion.” Zechariah’s father is literally “his father.” His son refers to Jehoiada’s son Zechariah, which Good News Translation makes clear. New Living Translation attempts to capture the sense of Joash’s disregard for Jehoiada’s kindness by rendering this whole sentence as “That was how King Joash repaid Jehoiada for his love and loyalty—by killing his son.”
And when he was dying: The pronoun he refers to Zechariah, which Good News Translation and Nova Tradução na Linguagem de Hoje make explicit.
May the LORD see and avenge!: As Zechariah was dying, he called for God to see what the people were doing and to punish them. Other possible renderings for avenge are “punish” (Good News Translation, New Century Version) and “pay back.” In some languages the verbs see and avenge may require objects. A possible model that does this is “May the LORD see what you are doing and avenge my death!” (similarly New Living Translation). This direct quotation of Zechariah’s dying words may be made into indirect speech by rendering the last half of the verse as “Just before Zechariah died, he asked the LORD to consider what they were doing to him and to punish them for it.”
