Revised Standard Version begins a new paragraph here, but we suggest starting the paragraph at the next verse since the subject matter changes there.

Then they sounded the trumpets and gave a loud shout: The trumpets may be rendered simply “trumpets” (Good News Bible), since they have not been mentioned before in the story. These trumpets were made of metal, perhaps of silver (see Num 10.1-10). The sound of the trumpets here signaled breaking camp to fight, as in Num 10.9. The men were ready for battle. If it is thought necessary, translators could build in the background information by saying “Then they signaled that they were ready for battle [or, to fight the enemy] by blowing trumpets and shouting loudly” or “Then they blew trumpets and shouted loudly to show that they were ready to fight.”
