Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 15:8

Every debt you owe to the royal treasury: Every debt you owe may be expressed as “All the money you owe.” The royal treasury may be rendered simply “the king” (Contemporary English Version) or even “me.”

And any such future debts shall be canceled for you from henceforth and for all time: Good News Bible uses appropriate legal language here, but in languages that do not have the passive voice, translators may say “In the future you will not have to repay any money that you owe the king [or, me].”

Alternative models for this verse are:

• All your debts to the royal treasury are canceled, and you will never again be asked to pay them.

• You will not have to repay any money you now owe the king [or, me], or repay it in the future.
