So they all reached the land of Judah safely, and they mourned for Jonathan and his companions and were in great fear; and all Israel mourned deeply: The connector So is better than “Then” (Good News Bible) to begin this verse. A model for this verse that is a little better than the one in Good News Bible is:

• So all of Jonathan’s remaining men reached Judea safely, although they were terribly afraid, and were grieving over the death of Jonathan and the men who had been with him. Then the whole Jewish nation mourned greatly.
