Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 11:58

Contemporary English Version expresses verses 58-59 as part of Antiochus’ letter, but the Greek text does not do this. It is better not to use direct discourse here (so Revised Standard Version, Good News Bible).

And he sent him gold plate and a table service, and granted him the right to drink from gold cups and dress in purple and wear a gold buckle: Gold plate and a table service refers to a set of utensils made of gold: probably bowls, cups, and plates. Good News Bible says “a set of gold tableware,” and Contemporary English Version has “some gold plates and dishes.” The right to drink from gold cups was a privilege of the nobility (see 1~Esd 3.6). Antiochus’ father Alexander had given Jonathan the purple robe (see 1Macc 10.62) and the gold buckle (see 1Macc 10.89). The confirmation of these privileges and the gift of the gold tableware indicated that Antiochus had respect for Jonathan’s power in the region, but the act of confirming these privileges also showed that he had power over Jonathan.
