After this Trypho returned, and with him the young boy Antiochus, who began to reign and put on the crown: Trypho probably made Antiochus king in 145 b.c. After this may be expressed as “Some time later” (Good News Bible). Trypho returned to Antioch, the capital. He had apparently been there as a supporter of Alexander, and was probably among the troops dismissed by Demetrius~II (verse 38). Since this is the beginning of a new section, it will be helpful to include information about where Trypho returned from by saying “Trypho returned to Antioch from visiting Imalkue the Arab.” Since Antiochus was only a young boy, Trypho took charge. Good News Bible makes this clear by rendering who began to reign and put on the crown as “Trypho … crowned him king.” When Trypho crowned the boy Antiochus, he became Antiochus~VI, although Demetrius~II still claimed to be king. It may be helpful for the reader if we say that Trypho “crowned him as King Antiochus~VI.”
An alternative translation model for this verse is:
• Some time later, Trypho returned to Antioch from visiting Imalkue the Arab, and brought young [or, the boy] Antiochus with him. He crowned him as King Antiochus~VI.
