When Demetrius heard of these things he was grieved and said: Demetrius heard that his rival Alexander had outsmarted him. The verb chosen for grieved should reflect an attitude of disappointment, frustration, and anger appropriate to the occasion. A possible model for this verse is:
• When King Demetrius heard what Alexander had done, he was very frustrated [or, terribly upset] and said….
