We have heard about you, that you are a mighty warrior and worthy to be our friend: For the use of the plural pronouns We and our by the king to refer to himself, see the comments on verse 16. The Greek phrase translated mighty warrior is a Hebrew idiom, which is usually expressed as “mighty man of valor” in Revised Standard Version (see, for example, Jdg 6.12). It may be rendered “powerful and courageous soldier.” For friend, that is, “friend of the king,” see the comments on 1Macc 2.18. A suggested model for this verse is:

• I have learned that you are a powerful and courageous soldier, and deserve to be made a Friend of the King.
