The sons of Merari: Mahli, Libni his son, Shime-i his son, Uzzah his son: Merari was the third son of Levi (verse 1). Verse 19 has already identified Mahli as one of Merari’s sons. In this context sons is better translated “descendants” (Good News Translation, Contemporary English Version, New Living Translation). As in verses 4-15, 20-24 and 26-27, Good News Translation restructures verses 29-30 to avoid repeating the words his son.
