It was he who served as priest in the house that Solomon built in Jerusalem: This parenthetical statement interrupts the genealogical list of Eleazar’s descendants, explaining a detail about Azariah. Some scholars consider this an allusion to the incident recorded in 2 Chr 26.17-21. It is often noted that this comment concerning Azariah should be attached to the Azariah named in verse 9, since he was the Azariah who served at the time of Solomon. Indeed, Knoppers and Klein move it to verse 9.
The house that Solomon built refers to “the Temple which King Solomon built” (Good News Translation). Even King James Version uses the word “temple” in this context since the reference may otherwise be unclear. In some languages it will be necessary to say “the Temple that Solomon caused to be built.”
